Question by christopher b: how to carry two people on a mountain bike?
OK i have a simple little mountain bike i use to ride with my friends its a 24 inch NEXT bike. My friends bike got destroyed (in a lake) and he likes to take mine and I am getting pissed. Question by : friend really likes to ride her mountain bike on steep terrain. conflicts she may have with environment damage?
One of my environmentalist friends really likes to ride her mountain bike on steep terrain. She particularly likes racing downhill on ski slopes during the summer. What are some conflicts she may have in reconciling her sport with potential damage to the environment? How can we sustain soil resources?

Answer by R.m Saucedo
I would say making sure that the type of tires she uses cause as little damage as possible and also that when she is doing this that the ground is packed and not wet or soft. I have a mountain bike that I do some trails with like this one http://www.2wheelbikes.com/sx30-mountain-bike.html and really its just being careful that is going to be the biggest problem.

Question by mooseyjoe17: Can a Rear Rack fit on a full suspension mountain bike?
I have a mountain bike with a rear suspension system on it. The back fork is attached to a spring and a piston so that it can give a bit when I hit a bump. Will one of those rear pannier racks fit on it or would it lock itself onto both the wheel and the frame. If it locked to both the frame and the wheel I suspect the up and down movement of the rear wheel would break it.

Sure can IF you get a rack that mounts on the seat post. They have a quick release lever for easy mount and dismounts of the rack.
Here is one example — there are others.

Question by Richard K: Where in Reno, Nevada can I rent a mountain bike for a week?
Looking to rent mountain bikes in Reno that we can also take with us to Death Valley for a week in mid-March.

Answer by mtbcrzy
It will be incredibly expensive but try renting from reno fitness or other bike shops in the area. There is one near The Atlantis whose name escapes me right now but for some reason i think that they rent. Also check the ski resorts, I know that they rent bikes but i’m not sure if theyll go for it. Another option would be to buy inexpensive ones from a department store. They woun’t be good bikes but a good choice if price is your priority.

Question by Colin: What type of wheel should I get for a 26 inch mountain bike rear?
What material should the rim be made out of? I want something that has a combination of light weight but strength for somewhat rigorous mountain biking. Are there any materials and/or brands that you recommend that don’t cost too much (maybe mid-range).

Question by sjcpunx408: Left shifter on my mountain bike is not shifting, what can I do?
I have a 17 in Trek mountain bike, and the left shifter (gears 1-3) is not shifting, how can I fix this problem? Thank you.

Answer by xsmurfster
You’ll need to be more specific about the problem. What do you mean by not shifting? Is the derailleur failing to push the chain or is the derailleur not moving at all? If the former, you will most likely need to readjust the derailleur/cable tension. If the cable haven’t been changed for a long time it’s possible they have stretched beyond what can be fixed by adjustments, in which case you will need to replace the cable (~). If so, I’d suggest you change all four cables at once as they other ones are probably in bad shape too. There are many good tutorials online for this, but I highly suggest you have a look at the excellent site http://bicycletutor.com or http://www.parktool.com/ “Repairs How-To” section. If the derailleur is not moving at all. Check that the cable isn’t damaged or cut off. In the unlikely event that the cable seems in good shape and has some tension in it, you may need to get your shifter serviced or replaced. If you cannot move the shifter’s levers, then the derailleur and/or cable might be stuck by some foreign debris.
Hope this helps.
