Question by Kelvin Y: Do mountain bike cleats fit road biking shoes?

I notice road bike shoes have two holes and the additional 3 holed triangle. Will SPD (mountain bike) cleats fit on these? Thanks!

Ye,s you can put SPD cleats on road bike shoes. You just use the two mounting holes instead of the three.

To add to Bob’s answer: Only if the road shoes you choose have a 2 or 4 bolt pattern. There are road shoes that only have 3 holes as mine do. Choose your shoes wisely turn them over and look at the bolt pattern.

Yes you can put SPDs on road bike shoes. Would I? Absolutely not. What the others answers are not telling you are the disadvantages to using SPDs on road shoes. First off you can’t walk well with SPDs on road shoes, the combination of hard plastic or carbon sole with a metal cleat against pavement doesn’t work well, you’ll think you are walking on ice. Secondly SPDs wont last walking around on pavement, you’ll wear them out or mess the cleats up to a point you may or may not be able to clip in or out of the pedals and that could be hazardous to ones health say nothing about replacing them every two or three months. SPD cleats should be worn or used on shoes where they are recessed, MTB shoes that is what they were designed for not road.
If you choose to use SPDs on your Road Bike at least use the MTB shoe and cleat combo so it recessed like many people do including myself, this is my combo. http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1057934_-1_400034_400009_400098 This way you don’t end up hurting yourself or someone else.
